34-year-old Gerald Majeres from Jackson Wisconsin, has been charged with
attaching an electric shock collar used to control the family dog to his
8-year-old stepdaughter's leg and shocking her because she was eating
her breakfast too slowly. A felony child abuse charge was filed against
the man Tuesday in Washington County Circuit Court.

Heartbreaking photos of an 8 month old Yellow Labrador Retriever, and
the Electronic Training Collar he wore can be seen in an article.
Note: According to his vet the large hole in his neck was NOT due to a
tracheotomy - it appeared to be a burn from one of the two prongs/probes
of the Electronic Collar. Rufus also apparently had another hole burned
into his neck which was slightly smaller.

This little chihuahua was named Princess Sophia. She spent her final six months in my home. She was only 6 1/2 when I helped her to the bridge. Although the burns from the shock collar were only one of many maladies this poor girl suffered, they were also a constant reminder of her former life.
Here is a bit for you to think about...You have a sore and the hair starts to grow back. Think of how much it itches...Now imagine your entire neck feeling that way. Daily, I put multiple moisturizers on her neck to try to relieve some of the pain and itchyness. Nothing worked. I dremmeled her nails completely round weekly because otherwise, she literally tore her throat open. She also screamed...not whined or growled, but screamed to the point you could hear her outside as she tried to relieve the itching.
Another side effect of the shock collar is that she had brain damage. The vet could not say for sure if it caused her blindness, but the brain damage, he is 100% sure that the shock collar was the cause. The brain damage eventually triggered seizures. Sophie was UNDER 5 lbs and her seizures were extremely violent. It would start with a slight stumble and if I could catch them at that point, they would last just under 5 minutes, if not, they lasted longer. After stumbling, the foam would start to come out of her nose and mouth and her entire body would go stiff. Since she also had an almost useless leg due to 3 breaks, she would end up on her back, twitching. After her seizure, she would sleep for the rest of the day.
My vet has a rescue Rottie that is 90 lbs. His Rottie has the exact same burns from a bark collar. He also has the brain damage and seizures as well as poor vision. He got the Rottie when it was less than a year old, so it was not 6 years worth of use that caused this, it can happen much quicker.
You want to see how effective of a tool this is? Try it on your own neck, see how you like it. Diligence is the most effective training tool. A shock collar is a lazy way out. It is ABUSE, it is NOT HUMANE and anyone who chooses to use them is NOT an animal lover!

They are totally cruel and inhumane... Even worse than the itching, was the healing. She would scratch the burned area and just cry... Victoria heard her through the phone more than once. I would usually have to leave the room too... It was heartbreaking.
